Impressive mosaic is Amphipolis ' latest surprise find

A 4.5x3m.-wide mosaic has been revealed as covering the floor of the chamber just past the Caryatids during the ongoing excavations on the Kasta Tumulus monument at Amphipolis.

The scene shows Hermes (Mercury) running in front of a chariot led by a yet unknown bearded man bearing a laurel wreath. While there have been many speculations on the bearded man's identity or on what might be hidden in the yet unexcavated part of the scene, the only thing we can do is admire the fine lines and exquisite quality of the mosaic. Its style, which can be safely dated to the 4th c. BC also puts an end to an ongoing scientific argument according to which the tomb could have been of Roman date.
