H Αμερικανική Σχολή Κλασικών Σπουδών στην Αθήνα, αφοσιωμένη στη συστηματική μελέτη του ελληνικού πολιτισμού από την αρχαιότητα έως σήμερα, είναι ένας από τους κορυφαίους ερευνητικούς και εκπαιδευτικούς φορείς σε όλο τον κόσμο. Ιδρύθηκε το 1881 και έκτοτε προσφέρει μια φιλόξενη βάση για μελέτη και έρευνα στην Ελλάδα σε μελετητές και μεταπτυχιακούς φοιτητές από περίπου 170 συμβεβλημένα κολέγια και πανεπιστήμια της Βόρειας Αμερικής.

Lord of the Gold Rings: The Grave of the Griffin Warrior of Pylos

In 2015, archaeologists discovered a 3500-year old undisturbed shaft grave near the Palace of Nestor at Pylos in southwestern Greece. Excavators Shari Stocker and Jack Davis describe spectacular weapons, ivory combs, seal stones, and Minoan-style gold rings, which afford unparalleled insights into art and ritual at the dawn of Mycenaean civilization.
The University of Cincinnati archaeological excavations at the Palace of Nestor, Pylos resumed on May 18, 2015 for the first time since 1969. During the course of the campaign, the so-called grave of the “Griffin Warrior” was discovered a few hundred meters from the Palace. This presentation will describe the excavation of this remarkable grave and discuss the four gold rings found therein. The discovery of so many gold rings was unexpected and unusual. The iconography of these rings is extraordinary and of great significance for the study of Minoan and Mycenaean ideology in the early Late Bronze Age. This undisturbed burial affords an excellent opportunity to examine aspects of Early Mycenaean funerary ritual, gender association with grave goods, and burial structure that cannot be obtained through more standard multi-individual burial contexts.
Οι αρχαιολογικές ανασκαφές του Πανεπιστημίου του Cincinnati στο ανάκτορο του Νέστορα στην Πύλο, ξεκίνησαν ξανά, στις 18 Μαΐου 2015 για πρώτη φορά μετά από το 1969.
Κατά τη διάρκεια της επιχείρησης αυτής, ο τάφος του αποκαλούμενου Γρύπα Πολεμιστή ανακαλύφθηκε λίγα μέτρα μακριά από το Ανάκτορο.
Η ομιλία αυτή θα περιγράψει την ανασκαφή αυτού του σπουδαίου τάφου και θα εξετάσει τα τέσσερα χρυσά δακτυλίδια που βρέθηκαν εκεί. Η ανακάλυψη τόσων πολλών χρυσών δακτυλιδιών ήταν απρόσμενη και ασυνήθιστη.
Η εικονογραφία τους είναι ξεχωριστή και σπουδαίας σημασίας για την μελέτη της Μινωικής και Μυκηναϊκής ιδεολογίας στην πρώιμη φάση της Ύστερης Εποχής του Χαλκού.
Η αδιατάρακτη αυτή ταφή προσφέρει μια εξαιρετική ευκαιρία για τη μελέτη της των εθίμων της ταφής στην Πρώιμη Μυκηναϊκή εποχή, την σχέση του φύλου με τα κτερίσματα και την ταφική γνώση που δεν θα μπορούσε να αποκτηθεί μέσα από τη μελέτη περισσότερων τυπικών ομαδικών τάφων.
