The invention of scuba has freed Calypsos team to maneuver underwater deeper, longer and less encumbered. By contrast, Greek divers, who have gathered sponges from the sea floor since ancient times, work in metal helmets and weighted boots. Tethered to their boat by twin umbilical cords, a lifeline and an air hose, they can only inch clumsily across the sea floor, painstakingly harvesting the living sponges.
