How do #refugees portray themselves compared to how they are portrayed in the media?

Project by @TomasVH. How do #refugees portray themselves compared to how they are portrayed in the media? To find out, I retraced the refugee trail through Europe with an Augmented Reality app, looking for photos that people had posted to Instagram along the way and making composite images. Viewing these refugee selfies, people's personalities shine through--some love cracking jokes, others are romantics, others long for their homes. In short, they are just like us. In these volatile times it seems that any one of us could suddenly become a refugee. If forced into #exile, how would you want others to see you? What photos would your share with people back home who may be worried? The full project, titled "Traces of Exile" can be seen as a video installation at the ICP Museum in New York and the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA) in Winston-Salem, NC. For more details and images, you can visit @TracesofExile. Instagram image by @Reza.HDZ, background layer by @TomasVH. #TracesofExile @thephotosociety @pulitzercenter
