Amfipolis - The Skeleton of the Dead has been found.



The 3rd Chamber

Excavations are almost over, since the Skeleton of the Dead has been found.


Pieces from the decoration of the Coffin

Pieces of the Coffin, made from bones and glass, were found inside the Tomb. Metal nails from the wooden coffin were also discovered.

Dimensions

The outer dimensions of the Tomb are 3,23m length, 1.56m width and 1m height.

The place for the Coffin

Inside the Tomb there is a place for the wooden coffin, 0.54m wide and 2.35m long.

The Skeleton

The bones of the Dead of Amphipolis have been found inside and outside the Tomb. This material will be carefully examined by scientists.

The second leaf of the marble door

The excavations in the 3rd Chamber brought to light the second leaf of the marble door, in good condition

The team is digging in the floor of the 3rd Chamber.

The depth so far is 1.40m and there seems to be an artificial trench of about 8sq meters, filled with sand.

The missing marble upright that looked like a door

When the archaeologists first saw this carving, they supposed that this was door 0,96 meters wide that would lead to a possible 4th Chamber. On the announcement on October 28th, they stated that in this place there has been a marble upright that has been removed.
