Among the thousands of artifacts in the tunnel are several statuettes and shells
An astonishing discovery made by archaeologists in Mexico. It all started in 2003 when the entrance of a tunnel discovered in the ancient city of Teotihuacan, located at a distance of about 50 km from Mexico City, Mexico's capital today. The investigation into this tunnel revealed a unique range of archaeological treasure and promises an even bigger.
Glamorous and mysterious
The Teotihuacan is considered one of the most important (if not the biggest) city in the pre-Columbian period in Mexico. It is believed that there was a rich and powerful City State for almost six centuries, from 700 BC to 100 BC and then turned in the biggest metropolis not only in Mexico but throughout the world. It is estimated that the period from the third until the seventh century AD the Teotihuacan had about 200 thousand inhabitants.
Despite the intense activity a mystery veil covers the history of the city and its inhabitants after despite the efforts of archaeologists have not found many artifacts to answer the many questions that exist about Teotihuacan. The big problem is that the inhabitants of Teotihuacan is not left behind any written text or other relevant document.
The findings
After the discovery of the tunnel in 2003 it was decided not to pursue any of the traditional methods of archaeological research. Initially the survey and excavation of the tunnel took autonomous robots and when they get enough archaeologists continued the excavation and their crews. As announced in the tunnel have been found so far about 50 thousand objects (figurines, jewelry, shells, etc.). The dating of the findings shows that have age about 1,800 years.
Archaeologists estimate that these objects are associated with some kind of ceremonies (especially children) and that the tunnel is part of an important holy site in the region. The responsible of the excavation predicting the presence of such a large in number but also value the findings can only be associated with very important persons of Teotihuacan and in particular with members of Royal families of the city which have been buried there. The excavation of the tunnel continues all expect what else would come out to the surface.
