The name for the Milky Way / Galaxy, (Greek: Γαλαξίας Galaxias) is derived from the Greek word for milk (γάλα, gala). One legend explains how it was created by Heracles when he was a baby. His father, Zeus, loved his son, who was born of a mortal woman. He decided to let the infant Heracles suckle on his divine wife Hera's milk when she was asleep, an act which would provide the baby with godlike qualities. When Hera woke up and realized that she was breastfeeding an unknown infant, she pushed him away and the spurting milk became the Milky Way.

Το ελληνικό όνομα για το Γαλαξία προέρχεται από τη λέξη για το γάλα. Ένας θρύλος εξηγεί πώς ο Γαλαξίας μας δημιουργήθηκε από τον Ηρακλή, όταν ήταν μωρό. Ο πατέρας του Δίας αγαπούσε το γιο του, ο οποίος είχε γεννηθεί από την θνητή Αλκμήνη. Αποφάσισε να αφήσει το βρέφος να θηλάζει από το γάλα της συζύγου του Ήρας ενώ αυτή κοιμόταν, μια πράξη η οποία θα προσέδινε στο μωρό θεϊκές ιδιότητες. Όταν η Ήρα ξύπνησε και συνειδητοποίησε ότι τη θήλαζε ένα βρέφος άγνωστο, το απώθησε και το γάλα που ανάβλυσε έγινε ο Γαλαξίας μας.

The Origin of the Milky Way is a painting by the Italian late Renaissance master Jacopo Tintoretto, in the National Gallery, London, formerly in the Orleans Collection. It is an oil painting on canvas, and dates from ca.1575–1580.
